
When you’re building a checkout flow or want to use a custom thank you page, you’ll use the [Redirect URL](/help/articles/how-do-I-redirect-my-customer-to-a-website-URL-after-successful-checkout) to navigate your customer to this page after successful checkout.

To personalize this page, you can use information collected at the checkout, such as customer name, customer email and order details.

## How to add query and path variables?

1.  Open your Checkout Page dashboard and click on any checkout

2.  Go to the **After payment** tab and open **Checkout confirmation &amp; redirect**

3.  Choose **Redirect to URL** and paste the URL link into the text box

This way, you can add the next step in your checkout flow, such as a landing page or a thank you page.

After adding the Redirect URL, you can **query** and **path** variables.

#### Note

We don’t recommend using the redirect URL to *store* information collected at checkout. If you need to store information collected at checkout in your own database, spreadsheet or CRM, we recommend [using Zapier](/help/articles/integrate-with-zapier).

## How to use path variables?

Path variables allow you to structure the URL path, redirecting to a different page within your site based on the order information. An example would be:

`https://example.com/thank-you/[order id]`

## How to use query variables?

Query variables, or URL parameters, allow you to add data to a URL, which you can use on the page.

For example, you can use the customer’s name to say “Thank you, John” and repeat the email address to which their order confirmation will be sent.

If you’re redirecting to a website that contains a checkout embed or pop-up, you can use query variables to [pre-fill information in the checkout](/help/articles/prefill-checkout-fields).

Query variables look like this in the URL:

`https://example.com/thank-you?customer_name=John&customer_email=john@gmail.com`

First, type in the **Parameter**, and then you’ll click on the information you want to add. For example, `customer_name` , then click on **Name**. Now your query variable has been added.

## Export payments and subscriptions

Checkout Page stores all customer field information with the payment or subscription on Stripe. This information is automatically included in all Stripe exports.

Follow these steps to export your payment data from Stripe:

1.  Log into your Stripe dashboard and navigate to **Payments**

2.  On the top right of the overview, click **Export** ![image-ff04.png](/img/cms/help/image-ff04.png)

3.  Choose the date range and optionally, customise the columns to export ![image-9597.png](/img/cms/help/image-9597.png)

4.  Click **Export**

All custom fields from Checkout Page will automatically be added to the export. 

Don’t worry if you can’t find them in the column list, they are hidden and will be included.

After exporting your data, you can use the **created\_with (metadata)** column in the spreadsheet and filter using the **checkoutpage** value for all your payments and subscriptions from Checkout Page. ![image-f910.png](/img/cms/help/image-f910.png)

## Export subscriptions only

**Payments** tab on Stripe can include both **One-time payments** and **Subscriptions**. 

To export new subscriptions, go to the **Billing** tab on your Stripe dashboard and click **Subscriptions**.

Checkout Page is a one-page checkout or form that is easy to customize to match your brand, design elements and communication style.

You can choose to use our default checkout confirmation or write a custom confirmation to reflect your brand’s tone of voice.

## Default confirmation

The default confirmation is enabled on all new checkouts and forms, and contains the following information:

* Confirmation of payment or submission

* Thanks to your customer

* Which email address the confirmation email will be sent to (if enabled)

* Download button (if applicable)

You cannot change the content of the default confirmation.

Click **Preview** to preview the default confirmation.

## Custom confirmation

To tailor your confirmation to your business needs, click **Custom confirmation**.

We recommend using your custom confirmation to thank your customers and let them know about any next steps.

1.  From your Checkout Page dashboard, click on any checkout or form

2.  Go to the **After payment** tab (**After submission** for forms) and click on **Checkout confirmation &amp; redirect**

3.  Choose **Custom confirmation**

4.  Edit your **Confirmation heading**

Click **Preview** to display the custom confirmation.

You can dynamically insert product, customer, and payment information in your custom email confirmation via the + icon in the text field.

The following data variables are always available.

* Product title

* Product amount

* Payment date

* Payment status

* Payment method

* Order ID

* Customer portal

* Customer email address

* License key (if enabled)

* SKU

**Please note: When redirecting your checkout, no confirmation message will be displayed to your customer after payment, the redirect is immediate.**

Optionally, you can also prefill your checkout/form fields or add any field and variant data to your page’s URL.

## How to test your checkout redirect

The best way to test your redirect is to make a test payment.

1.  Open your Checkout Page dashboard and click on any checkout or form

2.  Navigate to <strong>Test payments </strong>(**Test submissions** for forms)

3.  Copy/paste the test card details into your card field and click **Pay** or **Submit** the form

4.  Wait for your checkout/form to redirect to your website URL

## How to stop redirecting your checkout/form

If you no longer wish to redirect your checkout/form, uncheck **Redirect** and select from the other two options.

* Select **Confirmation** to display a confirmation message

* Select **Next checkout** to display the next checkout

Checkout Page is a one-page checkout that is easy to customize to match your brand, design elements and communication style.

You can choose to use our default email confirmation or write a custom confirmation to reflect your brand’s tone of voice.

## Email confirmation

To add, customize or remove your email confirmation, follow these steps:

1.  Open your Checkout Page dashboard and click on any checkout or form

2.  Navigate to the **After payment** tab (**After submission** for forms) and open **Email confirmation**

Here you can choose between the following options:

* Default email

* Custom email

* No email

## Default email

To preview the default email, select **Default email** and click **Save**. The default confirmation will be shown on the right.

You can also choose to **Send test email** and preview it in your mailbox.

Our default email confirmation thanks your customer and provides a breakdown of their purchase.

You cannot change the content of the default confirmation.

## Custom email

Check **Custom email** to send a custom email to your customers after successful checkout or submission.

### Subject

* Used as your email subject line

* Required and cannot be left blank

### Email body

* Optional

* Supports HTML

We recommend using your custom confirmation email to thank your customers, give them a breakdown of their purchase and let them know about any next steps.

To preview your custom email, fill in the details and click **Save**. Your custom email confirmation will be shown on the right.

### HTML support

You can add HTML to your email body to design your email and add links.

Unfortunately, Checkout Page cannot support HTML added to your email body.

## No email

Selecting **No email** will stop an email confirmation from being sent to your customers.

This option can be useful if you want to follow up with your customers in a different way or redirect them to another checkout.

## Send test email

For both **Default email** and **Custom email**, you can send yourself a test email at any time.

This is a great way to see how the email looks and check you’ve included all the information your customers need.

Click **Send test email** to send a test email to the address of your Checkout Page account.

You cannot change the recipient of this test email.

Test emails will be sent to recipients added under **Payment notification emails**.

There is no limit to the number of test emails you can send to yourself.

## Custom email confirmation field data variables

How do I send an email confirmation after successful checkout or submission?


In some payment setups, you will want to be able to identify data of a successful charge in your own system. You might want to save the payment to one of your users or save the products your customer paid for. The query parameter feature allows you to do so.

If you add query parameters when you link to your page, Checkout Page will 1. save these to the sale or subscription, 2. save these to the payment or subscription in Stripe and 3. append these to the Redirect URL (if set).

These options allow you to keep track of information around the sale, integrate with third-party services via Stripe and Zapier and save the data in your own system or use it on a confirmation page.

## Capturing query parameters

Let’s walk through the scenario of identifying which of your users paid you through Checkout Page.

### 1. Find the best way to identify your users

In most applications or funnels, each user will have a unique identifier such as `id`, `userId` or `email`. This could also be a phone number, an oAuth token or a session ID. Anything that’s uniquely tied to a user works.

### 2. Add your query parameters to the URL of your page

Now copy the URL of your Page, e.g. `{NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL}/c/checkoutpage/the-selling-on-checkout-page-handbook`.

When you link to this URL, you can add the identifier you found in Step 1. Your query parameter could look like this: `?userId=101`, **userId** being the name of the parameter and **101** being the identifier of your current user.

If you want to add multiple query parameters, you can add them with a &amp;, like `?userId=101&productId=110`.

The full URL would now look like `{NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL}/c/checkoutpage/the-selling-on-checkout-page-handbook?userId=101&productId=110`.

Now, anytime a customer completes the checkout form, the query parameters and values will be saved to the sale or subscription and to Stripe.

## Using query parameters

Captured query parameters are available in the **Payment** on Checkout Page, in the **Payment** on Stripe and will be appended to the **Redirect URL** if you’re using this.

Let’s see how you can access each of these.

### 1. Using query parameters on Checkout Page

You can find the captured query parameters in each **Payment** item on Checkout Page.

From your dashboard, simply go to your **Payments** tab and click on the sale you’re looking for. You should then see the captured query parameters.

### 2. Using query parameters in Stripe and third-party integrations

Checkout Page saves all your query parameters to the Payment or Subscription in Stripe. This allows you to keep track of your data in Stripe as well as use it with their webhooks and many third-party integrations.

When saving query parameters to Stripe, the name of the parameter is prefixed with `query_`. That means that `userId` becomes `query_userId`. You can find the saved query parameters in each Payment or Subscription item in Stripe, in the `Metadata` section.

### 3. Using query parameters with the Redirect URL

If you turn on the **Redirect to URL** after payment option, your customer will be redirected to your Redirect URL when a payment succeeds.

If you used query parameters in the URL to your checkout page, we will append the parameters to your Redirect URL.

With the above examples, this could look like `https://mywebsite.com/success?userId=101&productId=110`.

Here you can extract those parameters using the technology of your choice and save details of the payment in your database.

## What is a subscription status?

Whenever someone attempts to subscribe to your checkout, a subscription is created on Checkout Page and on Stripe. Once this is done, we’ll attempt to collect payment for that subscription.

From the moment your subscription has been created, it is automatically given a subscription status, which is then updated as your customer moves through the process. This helps business owners like you keep track of your subscribers and manage their access to your services.

## Types of subscription status

Checkout Page uses a variety of subscription status types to ensure that your subscription status is always up to date.

### Incomplete

**Incomplete** subscription status means that a subscription signup has been attempted, but no payment has been collected.

Upon creation of a subscription, by default, it is given the status of **Incomplete,** and Checkout Page will attempt to collect payment from your customer. Once the payment is successful, its status will move to **Active** (or **Trialing** if using trials).

Some payments may initially fail for such reasons as incorrect card details provided on the first try. If these are corrected within the session, this same subscription will be moved to **Active**.

If the customer leaves the checkout and attempts to subscribe again, a new subscription will be created.

### Incomplete expired

When someone attempts a subscription signup and doesn’t finalise the payment within 24 hours, the subscription signup expires.

Subscriptions with status **Incomplete** will move to **Incomplete expired** after 24-48 hours.

### Trialing

If a subscription with a trial has been successful, its status will change to **Trialing** indicating that a trial has started. It will remain in this status until the end of the trial.

### Scheduled

When using the [subscription start date feature](https://checkoutpage.co/help/articles/start-date), the subscription will start at a future date.

A successful signup with a future subscription start date will have its Checkout Page status as **Scheduled**.

The same subscription on Stripe will be marked as **Trialing until**.

### Active

When a subscription has been created and the payment has been collected, its status is **Active**.

### Completed

This subscription status applies to [payment plan subscriptions](https://checkoutpage.co/help/articles/payment-plan) that are based on a fixed amount of payments.

Once all the payments have been collected, the subscription status on Checkout Page will change to **Completed**.

*Example:*

Your payment plan consists of 4 payments. After the 4th payment, its status will change to **Completed**.

At the same time, this subscription status on Stripe will change to **Canceled**.

### Past due

This subscription status of **Past due** means that the most recent invoice (except the very first one) has failed or hasn’t been attempted.

You can manage your failed payment retries and rules in your [Stripe Billing dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/billing/automatic).

### Canceled

**Canceled** status means that the subscription has been canceled either by you, your customer or due to continued unsuccessful payments.
