
When you're building a checkout flow or want to use a custom thank you page, you'll use the [Redirect URL](/help/articles/how-do-I-redirect-my-customer-to-a-website-URL-after-successful-checkout) to navigate your customer to this page after successful checkout.

To personalize this page, you can use information collected at the checkout, such as customer name, customer email and order details.

## How to add query and path variables?

In the **Checkout confirmation & redirect** setting under **After payment**, you'll add the next step in your checkout flow, such as a landing page or a thank you page.

After adding the Redirect URL, you can **query** and **path** variables.

#### Note

We don't recommend using the redirect URL to _store_ information collected at checkout. If you need to store information collected at checkout in your own database, spreadsheet or CRM, we recommend [using Zapier](/help/articles/integrate-with-zapier).

## How to use path variables?

Path variables allow you to structure the URL path, redirecting to a different page within your site based on the order information. An example would be:

`https://example.com/thank-you/[order id]`

## How to use query variables?

Query variables, or URL parameters, allow you to add data to a URL, which you can use on the page.

For example, you can use the customer's name to say "Thank you, John" and repeat the email address to which their order confirmation will be sent.

If you're redirecting to a website that contains a checkout embed or pop-up, you can use query variables to [pre-fill information in the checkout](/help/articles/prefill-checkout-fields).

Query variables look like this in the URL:

`https://example.com/thank-you?customer_name=John&customer_email=john@gmail.com`

## Export payments and subscriptions

Checkout Page stores all customer field information with the payment or subscription on Stripe. This information is automatically included in all Stripe exports.

Follow these steps to export your payment data from Stripe:

1.  Log into your Stripe dashboard and navigate to **Payments**
    
2.  On the top right of the overview, click **Export**

3.  Choose the date range and optionally, customise the columns to export

4.  Click **Export**
    

All custom fields from Checkout Page will automatically be added to the export. 

Don't worry if you can't find them in the column list, they are hidden and will be included.

After exporting your data, you can use the **created\_with (metadata)** column in the spreadsheet and filter using the **checkoutpage** value for all your payments and subscriptions from Checkout Page.

## Export subscriptions only

**Payments** tab on Stripe can include both **One-time payments** and **Subscriptions**. 

To export new subscriptions, go to the **Billing** tab on your Stripe dashboard and click **Subscriptions**.

## Checkout confirmation

#### You can choose between the following checkout confirmations:

- Default confirmation
- Custom confirmation

## Default confirmation

The default confirmation is enabled on all new checkouts and contains the following information.

- Payment confirmation
- Thanks to your customer
- Which email address the confirmation email will be sent to (if enable)
- Download button (if applicable)

You cannot change the content of the default confirmation.

Click **Preview** to preview the default confirmation.

## Custom confirmation

To tailor your confirmation to your business needs, click **Custom confirmation**.

We recommend using your custom confirmation to thank your customers and let them know about any next steps.

- Click **Custom confirmation**
- Edit your confirmation heading
- Edit your confirmation message
- Click **Save**

Click **Preview** to display the custom confirmation.

We recommend keeping your confirmation heading short and sweet.

- Required and cannot be left blank
- Replaces the default “Payment confirmed!” / “Subscription confirmed”

### Confirmation message

We recommend a short confirmation message to thank your customers and let them know about any next steps.

- Optional
- No HTML
- Replaces the default “Thanks for your payment. You will receive an email confirmation shortly at {Customer email address}”

## Custom confirmation field data variables

You can dynamically insert product, customer, and payment information in your custom confirmation message using field data variables.

### Default field data variables

The following data variables are always available.

- Product title
- Product amount
- Payment date
- Payment status
- Payment method
- Order ID
- Customer portal
- Customer email address
- License key (if enabled)
- SKU

If you add custom fields to your checkout, a data variable will be available for each custom field.

### Field data variable example

You added a custom text field with the label **Name**.

**Name** would now be available for you to use as a field data attribute in your custom confirmation message. See below.

## How to redirect your checkout

- Edit a checkout
- Navigate to **After payment**
- Open **Checkout confirmation & redirect**
- Click **Redirect**
- Paste your website URL into the text box
- Click **Save**

That’s it, you’ve now redirected your checkout to a website URL.

When redirecting your checkout, no confirmation message will be displayed to your customer after payment, the redirect is immediate.

## How to test your checkout redirect

The best way to test your redirect is to make a test payment.

- Edit a checkout
- Navigate to **Test payments**
- Complete your checkout fields
- Copy/paste the test card details into your card field
- Click **Pay**
- Wait for your checkout to redirect to your website URL
- Update your redirect URL as needed

If you no longer wish to redirect your checkout, uncheck **Redirect** and select from the following options.

- Check **Confirmation** to display a confirmation message
- Check **Next checkout** to display the next checkout

## Default email

To preview the default email, click **Preview** and the default confirmation will be shown on the right.

Our default email confirmation thanks your customer and provides a breakdown of their purchase.

You cannot change the content of the default confirmation.

## Custom email

Check **Custom email** to send a custom email to your customers after successful checkout.

### Subject

- Used as your email subject line
- Required and cannot be left blank

### Email body

- Optional
- Supports HTML

We recommend using your custom confirmation email to thank your customers, give them a breakdown of their purchase and let them know about any next steps.

To preview your custom email, click **Preview** and the custom email confirmation will be shown on the right.

Click **Save** to save your changes.

### HTML support

You can add HTML to your email body to design your email and add links.

Unfortunately, Checkout Page cannot support HTML added to your email body.

## No email

Checking **No email** will stop an email confirmation from being sent to your customers.

This option can be useful if you want to follow up with your customers in a different way.

## Send test email

For both **Default email** and **Custom email**, you can send yourself a test email at any time.

This is a great way to see how the email looks and check you’ve included all the information your customers need.

Click **Send test email** to send a test email to the address of your Checkout Page account.

You cannot change the recipient of this test email.

Test emails will be sent to recipients added under **Payment notification emails**.

There is no limit to the number of test emails you can send to yourself.

## Custom email confirmation field data variables

You can dynamically insert product, customer, and payment information in your custom email confirmation using field data variables.

This help article will cover how you can send an email confirmation to your customers after a successful checkout and how you can customize your emails. 

How do I send an email confirmation after successful checkout?


In some payment setups you will want to be able to identify data of a successful charge in your own system. You might want to save the payment to one of your users or save the products your customer paid for. The query parameter feature allows you to do so.

If you add query parameters when you link to your page, Checkout Page will 1. save these to the sale or subscription, 2. save these the payment or subscription in Stripe and 3. append these to the Redirect URL (if set).

These options allow you to keep track of information around the sale, to integrate with third party services via Stripe and Zapier and to save the data in your own system or to use it on a confirmation page.

## Capturing query parameters

Let's walk through the scenario of identifying which of your users paid you through Checkout Page.

### 1. Find the best way to identify your users

In most applications or funnels, each user will have a unique identifier such as `id`, `userId` or `email`. This could also be a phone number, an oAuth token or session ID. Anything that's uniquely tied to a user works.

### 2. Add your query parameters to the URL of your page

Now copy the url of your Page, e.g. `{NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL}/c/checkoutpage/the-selling-on-checkout-page-handbook`.

When you link to this URL, you can add the identifier you found in step 1. Your query parameter could look like this: `?userId=101`, userId being the name of the parameter and 101 being the identifier of your current user. If you want to add multiple query parameters, you can add them with a &, like `?userId=101&productId=110`.

The full URL would now look like `{NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL}/c/checkoutpage/the-selling-on-checkout-page-handbook?userId=101&productId=110`.

Now, anytime a customer completes the checkout form, the query parameters and values will be saved to the sale or subscription and to Stripe.

## Using query parameters

Captured query parameters are available in the Sale or Subscription in Checkout Page, in the Payment in Stripe and will be appended to the Redirect URL if you're using this. Let's see how you can access each of these.

### 1. Using query parameters in Checkout Page

You can find the captured query parameters in each Sale of Subscription item in Checkout Page. Simply go to your Sales or Subscriptions overview and click on the item you're looking for. You should then see the captured query parameters.

### 2. Using query parameters in Stripe and third party integrations

Checkout Page saves all your query parameters to the Payment or Subscription in Stripe. This allows you to keep track of your data in Stripe as well as use it with their webhooks and many third party integrations.

When saving query parameters to Stripe, the name of the parameter is prefixed with `query_`. That means that `userId` becomes `query_userId`. You can find the saved query parameters in each Payment or Subscription item in Stripe, in the `Metadata` section.

### 3. Using query parameters with the Redirect URL

If you turn on the 'Redirect after payment' option, your customer will be redirected to your Redirect URL when a payment succeeds. If you used query parameters in the URL to your checkout page, we will append the parameters to your Redirect URL. With the past examples, this could look like `https://mywebsite.com/success?userId=101&productId=110`. Here you can extract those parameters using the technology of your choice and save details of the payment in your database.
